Stunning Aerial View of Antartica - Using a GoPro HERO3+ and a DJI Phantom 2 Drone

A couple of years ago, my wife and stayed in a nice little house right on the Straits of Magellan in Punta Arenas, Chile. I dreamed of Magellan's perilous journey through those straits and wondered what it might have been like. I wondered, too, what it would be like to travel further south beyond Tierra del Fuego to the southernmost continent of Antartica. Filmmaker Kalle Ljung gives a beautiful glimpse of the ice continent of Antartica.

This stunning aerial video by Kalle Ljung using nothing more than a GoPro HERO3+ and a DJI Phantom 2 is one of the most beautiful videos I've seen of Antartica. Kalle states: "This movie was shot during our 20 days trip to Antarctica in December 2014 to January 2015. We started from Ushuaia in Argentina and went to Port Williams in Chile, rounded Cape Horn and crossed the Drake Passage towards the Melchior Islands in Antarctica. We spent 16 days in the Antarctic and got to experience the most amazing scenery and wildlife before we returned back to Ushuaia."

Kalle proves that it's more about the artist than the camera when it comes to creating beautiful art. Of course, the tools do matter for these images would have been nearly impossible to obtain with anything other than a drone. Still, it's amazing to me that such beautiful video can come from such a small camera. Putting that camera on a gimbal slung under a small rotor drone - a package costing less than $2,000 - would have been inconceivable just a few years ago.
